In the 2024 Daytona 500, 42 NASCAR Cup Series teams are set to compete on Sunday, February 18. Among them, 36 teams with charters are guaranteed a spot in the race, leaving six ‘open’ teams to vie for the remaining four positions.
These ‘open’ teams, including drivers like Jimmie Johnson and Anthony Alfredo, will compete part-time. Qualifying for the Daytona 500 begins with a random draw on Tuesday to determine the order of cars for Wednesday’s qualifying session. Each driver completes a single flying lap around the 2.5-mile track. The two fastest cars secure the front row for the race and also start from pole position in Thursday’s Duel races.
The lineup for these Duel races is based on the Wednesday qualifying results, with odd-numbered qualifiers racing in Duel #1 and even-numbered qualifiers in Duel #2. The top two ‘open’ entries from Wednesday’s qualifying are guaranteed a spot in the Daytona 500.

Additionally, the highest-finishing ‘open’ driver in each Duel race earns a position in the race, with the next fastest driver from qualifying taking a spot if needed. Notably, Hendrick Motorsports has dominated recent Daytona 500 qualifying, but non-Chevrolet cars haven’t secured the pole position since 2012.
