The Indianapolis Colts announced on Tuesday that they have suspended wide receiver-punt returner Isaiah McKenzie and cornerback Tony Brown for the final three regular-season games due to conduct detrimental to the team.
Such team-imposed suspensions are a rarity in the NFL, where the league’s head office typically manages disciplinary actions against players. The Colts did not provide specific details about the incidents that led to the suspensions, leaving fans and the media curious about the nature of the players’ conduct.
Isaiah McKenzie, 28, has been a significant contributor on special teams throughout the season, serving as the primary kick and punt returner. Prior to Saturday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, where both players were inactive, McKenzie had played in all 13 games and showcased his versatility with 11 receptions for 82 yards.
Cornerback Tony Brown, also 28, started one game this season and appeared in 12, making his presence felt with 10 tackles, one interception, and one forced fumble. Brown has been a regular contributor on special teams, participating in over 70% of the team’s snaps in that capacity.

In response to the suspensions, the Colts promoted running back Tyler Goodson from the practice squad back to the active roster. Goodson made an immediate impact in Saturday’s victory against the Steelers, finishing with 11 rushes for 69 yards.
The Colts, currently standing at 8-6, face uncertainty in their running back situation, with Jonathan Taylor missing the last three games due to thumb surgery and Zack Moss suffering an injury during the Steelers game. Coach Shane Steichen has not confirmed whether Taylor or Moss will be available for Sunday’s crucial matchup against the Atlanta Falcons (6-8).
The suspended duo, McKenzie and Brown, will be ineligible to play in the remaining regular-season games against the Falcons and Raiders and a potentially division-deciding clash against the rival Texans in the regular-season finale. The Colts hope to navigate the challenges posed by these suspensions as they aim for a playoff berth in a competitive AFC.
