  • The incident in Brussels led to the abandonment of the Euro 2024 qualifier between Belgium and Sweden, prompting an increase in the terror alert in Brussels.

Football fans attending the Euro 2024 qualifier between England and Italy at Wembley Stadium on 17th October can expect a strong and conspicuous police presence in the wake of a shocking terror attack in Brussels. The incident in the Belgian capital, which tragically claimed the lives of two individuals, has prompted authorities to heighten security measures and vigilance.

The Metropolitan Police, responsible for the safety and security of fans at the Wembley match, have assured the public that there will be a significant and visible policing presence in and around the stadium to ensure a secure environment for all attendees.

“Given the events yesterday in Brussels, those attending the match can be reassured that they will see a highly visible policing presence,” stated the Metropolitan Police in a pre-match statement. “Officers are there to ensure the event passes off safely and provide reassurance to those attending.”

The tragic incident in Brussels occurred just before an international football match, leading to the abandonment of the Euro 2024 qualifier between Belgium and Sweden at halftime. Fans were temporarily confined to the stadium as armed officers conducted a thorough search for the suspected attacker, who was later identified as a 45-year-old Tunisian national and subsequently shot dead by the police.

In response to the heightened threat level, the terror alert in Brussels has been raised to its highest level. Authorities have increased police presence and have advised the public to exercise extra vigilance, urging them to avoid unnecessary travel.

Superintendent Gerry Parker, the match commander for the game, emphasized the collaborative efforts to ensure a safe environment for fans attending the event. “Our officers are experienced in dealing with large-scale public order events, and a flexible plan is in place to reduce the likelihood of crime and disorder,” he stated. “Please ensure you arrive in good time for the match and remain vigilant throughout; if you see anything suspicious, then flag it to an officer or one of the match stewards immediately so the necessary action can be taken.”

In light of the recent incidents and the prevailing security concerns, it is evident that authorities are leaving no stone unturned to ensure the safety and security of those attending major public events like football matches. The collective efforts of law enforcement agencies and the public are crucial in maintaining a sense of security and promoting a peaceful environment during these events.
