- The disciplinary panel recognized the unintentional breach and imposed a suspended ban, allowing Doyle to continue riding unless she fails another test within the next year.
Record-breaking jockey Hollie Doyle, renowned for her achievements in horse racing, has been handed a one-month suspended ban by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) after testing positive for Dihydrocodeine, a banned substance.
Doyle had been taking Dihydrocodeine, a painkiller, following surgery on her elbow after a fall at Wolverhampton in January. Unfortunately, she tested positive for the banned substance when returning to the saddle in April.
A disciplinary panel, acknowledging that the breach was unintentional, opted to suspend her ban for one year. The 26-year-old, who made history as the first female jockey to win a French Classic in 2022, explained that she ceased consuming the painkiller shortly after it was prescribed, switching to ibuprofen and paracetamol instead.
“After some research, we found that the contamination came from a packet of ibuprofen I had purchased when riding overseas, unknowingly containing small amounts of Dihydrocodeine. The BHA accepts that this was the likely source of the positive,” Doyle stated in a released statement.
“I’m extremely grateful to my family, friends, and employers for the support and advice over the last 5 months. We’re all very glad it’s over.”
Despite the suspension, Doyle is allowed to continue riding, but the imposed sanction will take effect if she fails another drug test within the next 12 months.
Hollie Doyle, a Group One-winning jockey, had an exceptional year in 2019, setting a new record for victories by a woman in Britain in a calendar year with 116 wins. Her achievements have made her a trailblazer in the world of horse racing, and this recent incident is an unexpected turn in her otherwise illustrious career. The horse racing community will be watching closely as she resumes her riding career after this suspension.
