- Man United is facing a left-back crisis due to injuries and loans.
- The team must find creative solutions to cover the absence of left-back players.
- Erik Ten Hag must make quick decisions to address the issue before the game.
Manchester United is grappling with a left-back predicament as Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are sidelined due to injuries, while Brandon Williams is out on loan. This setback leaves manager Erik Ten Hag facing another urgent situation after their disappointing loss to Tottenham.
Luke Shaw’s injury adds to the growing list of sidelined players at Manchester United. Erik ten Hag needs to develop creative solutions for the left-back position in their upcoming match.
Erik ten Hag had hoped to move beyond the days of makeshift solutions at Manchester United. Last season witnessed various temporary fixes, like loan signings Wout Weghorst and Marcel Sabitzer in January, in response to injuries, suspensions, and a demanding schedule.
Due to a lack of squad depth, the manager had to find alternatives across midfield and attack. While the expensive summer acquisitions of Rasmus Hojlund and Mason Mount were intended to alleviate this concern, the team now faces unexpected issues at left-back.
United recently confirmed that Luke Shaw, their primary left-back, will be sidelined significantly due to a muscle injury. This setback is considerable as Shaw was a regular under Ten Hag’s leadership, even preferred over one of his signings, Tyrell Malacia.
Tyrell Malacia is also on the injury list and isn’t a match-fit, having missed United’s pre-season tour to the United States. Consequently, the straightforward replacement option is unavailable.
Ten Hag mentioned on Friday that it will take ‘a few weeks’ before Malacia can be considered for selection.
Adding to the challenge, Brandon Williams, a left-back, was loaned to Championship leaders Ipswich Town on Thursday. While Williams saw minimal senior action last season, he could have been a viable solution as United faces Nottingham Forest on Saturday. Instead, he’s set to play for Ipswich against Leeds United.
Manchester Evening News reports that United actively seeks left-back cover following Shaw’s injury, introducing another makeshift solution.
With the transfer window closing soon, United must address the need for a backup goalkeeper, holding midfielder, and center-half. Regardless of transfer priorities, a quick solution is required as United aims to recover from their lackluster performance against Tottenham.
Ten Hag stated, “We have the solutions in our squad to cope with that. We thought about this scenario before the season, you hope to avoid it, but if it happens, you have to be ready for it.”
A potential option is to deploy Diogo Dalot, primarily a right-back but adaptable to the left-back role. Another option is Lisandro Martinez, a left-footed central defender, while Victor Lindelof could partner Raphael Varane in the center. Harry Maguire’s fitness is uncertain.
Alternatively, Erik ten Hag might consider the young left-back Alvaro Fernandez. The 20-year-old Spaniard featured in United’s pre-season matches and impressed after a successful loan spell at Preston North End.
Despite the uncertainties, Manchester United must find solutions to Shaw’s absence as they face Nottingham Forest. Supporters’ frustration is evident, with the anti-Glazer protest group 1958 planning a sit-in after the game.
The absence of left-backs could be a minor concern if Manchester United fails to secure a win against Forest, especially with tough matches against Arsenal and Brighton on the horizon.
Possible Solutions for the Left-Back Dilemma
Erik ten Hag needs to find a solution to the left-back problem. Some options include bringing in Diogo Dalot, who has played left-back before, using Lisandro Martinez, a central defender, as a fill-in, or considering young left-back Alvaro Fernandez. The choice will depend on Ten Hag’s assessment of their readiness for Premier League action.
