In a recent development, Manchester City has been hit with a hefty £120,000 ($152,000) fine by the Football Association (FA) following their players’ unsportsmanlike conduct toward referee Simon Hooper during their Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month.
The incident occurred in the 94th minute of the game when several City players, including Erling Haaland, Mateo Kovacic, and Ruben Dias, surrounded the match official. The dispute arose after Hooper failed to play advantage when Norwegian striker Erling Haaland was fouled, and play was halted, denying City a potential scoring opportunity with Jack Grealish through on goal.
The FA had charged City two weeks ago, citing a failure “to ensure their players did not behave in a way which was improper.” During a subsequent hearing, Manchester City admitted to the lapse and expressed regret over the improper conduct of their players.
Notably, this is not the first time City has faced disciplinary action for such behavior. In February, they were fined £75,000 for a similar offense during a Premier League fixture against Arsenal. Arsenal also faced penalties in that incident, underlining the FA’s commitment to maintaining order and sportsmanship on the field.
The Laws of the Game specify that match officials should only play advantage when there is a clear benefit for the non-offending team and no serious injuries or risk of confrontation. Replays of the incident in question showed initial confusion from Hooper, who signaled for a foul but did not blow his whistle promptly, leading to the subsequent controversy.
Despite the fine, no individual action will be taken against Erling Haaland, who expressed his frustration on social media after the match.
City manager Pep Guardiola refrained from criticizing Hooper directly but admitted his confusion over the incident during a post-match press conference. “It is hard when you review the image; the referee decides to blow the whistle after he has already said to play on. After the pass, the whistle, so I do not understand this action,” Guardiola remarked.
The fine reflects the FA’s commitment to upholding fair play and sportsmanship within the Premier League. City, despite leading twice in the match, ultimately settled for a 3-3 draw with Dejan Kulusevski’s 90th-minute equalizer securing a share of the points for Tottenham Hotspur.
