The Las Vegas Raiders have filled their general manager vacancy by hiring former Los Angeles Chargers GM Tom Telesco. This move comes on the heels of appointing Antonio Pierce as the head coach, marking a significant overhaul for the organization.
Telesco, 51, served as the Chargers’ general manager for 11 seasons before his termination at the end of the 2023 regular season alongside head coach Brandon Staley. During his tenure, he drafted notable players such as Keenan Allen, Melvin Gordon III, Joey Bosa, Derwin James Jr., Justin Herbert, Kenneth Murray Jr., and Tuli Tuipulotu.
The Raiders, under the ownership of Mark Davis, had been on the lookout for a seasoned candidate after their organizational shakeup in October, which saw the departure of head coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler. Davis initially considered up-and-coming candidates but shifted his focus to experienced figures after hiring Pierce as the head coach.
Telesco’s extensive NFL experience, beginning as an intern with the Buffalo Bills in 1991 and progressing through various roles with the Carolina Panthers and Indianapolis Colts, made him a standout choice for Davis. Telesco served as the Colts’ Vice President of Football Operations before joining the Chargers in 2013.
The newly appointed general manager inherits a team that finished the 2023 season with an 8-9 record and faces critical decisions, particularly regarding the quarterback position. Oft-injured veteran Jimmy Garoppolo, who was benched by Pierce, is a potential cut or trade candidate. Meanwhile, rookie Aidan O’Connell showcased promise in the final games, but questions remain about the team’s future at the position.
Telesco must also address the running back situation, with the decision on 2022 All-Pro Josh Jacobs looming. Jacobs, who held out and missed the entirety of the offseason program, training camp, and exhibition season, finished the season with career lows in various categories.
The Raiders’ new GM faces the immediate task of evaluating the team’s offensive coordinator position and considering options in free agency or through trades for a veteran quarterback. The team holds the 13th overall pick in the upcoming draft, but top quarterback prospects may be off the board by then.
Telesco, known for his draft acumen and experience, is expected to collaborate with head coach Antonio Pierce to guide the Raiders through a pivotal offseason as they aim for a quick turnaround. The Raiders finished the 2023 season 5-4 under the leadership of interim head coach Pierce, securing key victories, including a notable win against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.
