Turkish football finds itself in the midst of a profound crisis following the arrest of Ankaragucu’s president, Faruk Koca, for assaulting referee Halil Umut Meler after a Super Lig match against Rizespor ended in a 1-1 draw. The incident has prompted the suspension of all Turkish football leagues.
The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) acted swiftly, denouncing the “inhumane and despicable” attack on Meler. Koca, accompanied by two other suspects, now faces formal charges of “injuring a public official,” while three additional suspects are under judicial monitoring as the investigation unfolds.
The assault unfolded at the Eryaman Stadium during a tense match that concluded with a dramatic 97th-minute equalizer by Rizespor. As chaos erupted on the pitch with Ankaragucu fans invading, Koca struck Meler in the face at the final whistle. The situation escalated as Meler was further kicked while lying on the ground.
Reacting to the shocking incident, the TFF promptly suspended all leagues indefinitely, deeming the episode “shameful.” Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc stressed the ongoing nature of the investigation and called for a meticulous approach. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan added his voice to the condemnation, stating, “Sports means peace and brotherhood. Sports are incompatible with violence.”
In a court statement, Koca admitted to hitting the referee but attributed it to Meler’s “wrong decisions and provocative behavior.” He also cited a heart condition as grounds for his immediate departure from the scene.
The TFF linked this “despicable attack” to a pervasive culture of hostility towards referees, nurtured by players and club officials over several years. Erdogan emphasized that violence has no place in Turkish sports and extended well wishes for Meler’s recovery.
Halil Umut Meler, a FIFA referee since 2017, was hospitalized alongside Koca. The incident has ignited a nationwide debate on the treatment of referees in Turkish football, with demands for stringent measures against those responsible.
The indefinite suspension of all leagues injects uncertainty into the Super Lig schedule, leaving fans and stakeholders eagerly anticipating further decisions from the TFF. The incident underscores the imperative for a comprehensive effort to address the deep-seated issues surrounding the treatment of referees in Turkish football.
