Preview of Rugby Europe Championship
As the premier level of our competitions, the Rugby Europe Championship enters its second year with an expanded team roster and a successful new format introduced in 2023, enhancing visibility and competitiveness. The upcoming tournament offers another opportunity to witness the prowess of three teams—Portugal, Georgia, and Romania—that participated in the Rugby World Cup in France 2023, notably with Portugal’s historic win over Fiji in the final group stage.
Teams will be divided into two pools, engaging in group stage clashes before progressing to the semi-finals and finals, ultimately concluding with ‘Grand Finals’ to determine each team’s final rankings.
Scheduled to kick off in February, the tournament will commence with a group-stage clash between the Netherlands and Spain at the National Rugby Center in Amsterdam at 1:15 p.m. CET. The top eight European teams will then vie for a spot in the final on March 17 at the legendary stadium, home to Stade Français.
The main event in France on March 17, 2024, will feature four matches, culminating in the championship final at 21:00, with qualifiers and bronze finals beginning at midday.
The Paris event is a collaborative effort involving the French Rugby Federation (FFR), the National Rugby League (LNR), the Île-de-France Rugby League (LIFR), and the Interministerial Delegation for Major Sporting Events (DIGES).
Notably, in the previous edition, the Georgian men’s team secured victory in the 2023 Rugby Europe Championship, overcoming Portugal 38-11 in the final after trailing 12-11 at half-time. Georgia’s dominance secured their sixth European title at the Civitas Nuevo Vivero in Badajoz, Spain, on March 19, 2023.
The tournament, designed to attract other European teams and provide top-level competition, aims to rival the prestigious Six Nations tournament, which has been played for 140 years—since 1883 with teams from Ireland, Wales, Scotland, and England; since 1910 with the inclusion of France; and in its current format since 1996 with the addition of Italy.
