The Sugar Bowl is projected to be the higher-scoring game of the two College Football Playoff semifinals.
The over/under for the clash between the Texas Longhorns and Washington Huskies is 19 points higher than the Rose Bowl that precedes it on New Year’s Day.
Both of the passing offenses, led by Quinn Ewers and Michael Penix Jr., should find plenty of success inside the Superdome in New Orleans.
One former Washington quarterback believes there are some vulnerable areas in the Texas secondary that Penix can take advantage of and create the difference in the contest.
This year’s Sugar Bowl is a rematch of last year’s Alamo Bowl, which the Huskies won 27-20. Everyone expected to see Washington in this game. They started the season ranked Number 10. But they slowly rose throughout the season. For several weeks they looked certain to at least make the Rose Bowl.

And then, with Georgia’s loss to Alabama in the SEC Championship, they made it to Number 2. Texas, on the other hand, was a surprise. Only last week, they were ranked Number 7 in the nation — where they had been stuck the entire second half of the season.
Before that, they’d been trending downward. Alabama’s defeat of Georgia also helped Texas, who beat the Crimson Tide 34-24 back on September 9th.
Texas’ defense could be the star of the game. It held its last three opponents to a combined 44 points. A potential slowing down of Penix and the Washington offense would go down as Texas’ best defensive showing of the season.
The explosiveness on both sides of the ball is why the Longhorns can be justified as a four-point favorite over an undefeated power-five champion.
Texas Longhorns (12-1)
The Texas Longhorns, with a 12-1 record, clinched their second straight bowl game by defeating eight bowl-eligible teams, their only loss to Oklahoma. Offensively, they average 36 points per game (16th nationally), with a passing rank of 19th (286.8 yards/game) and a rushing rank of 24th (189.2 yards/game).
Quarterback Quinn Ewers has excelled with 3,161 yards, 21 touchdowns, and a 70.7% completion rate. Receivers Xavier Worthy and Adonai Mitchell stand out with 969 and 813 yards, respectively. Despite losing lead running back Jonathan Brooks, C.J. Baxter, and Jaydon Blue have stepped up with 595 and 339 rushing yards, the latter averaging 6.1 yards per carry.
Washington Huskies (13-0)
Undefeated at 13-0, the Washington Huskies secured their second straight bowl game by defeating eight bowl-bound teams, including Oregon (twice) and USC. With an impressive offensive performance, they average 37.7 points per game, ranking 10th nationally, excelling in passing with 343.8 yards per game (1st) but lagging in rushing at 125.2 yards per game (100th).
Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. had a stellar season, earning a Heisman finalist spot with 4,218 yards, 33 touchdowns, and a 65.9% completion rate. Receivers Rome Odunze and Ja’Lynn Polk stood out with 1,428 and 1,000 receiving yards, respectively. In the running game, Dillon Johnson dominated with 1,113 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns.
