Preview of Auckland Classics 2024

Summer of tennis is set to start with the ASB Classics, beginning on December 30th with WTA 250 action and continuing on January 6th with ATP 250 action.

One of the most awaited returns to the courts is that of American sensation Ben Shelton, who secured a wildcard entry for the 2023 ASB Classic. Fresh off an impressive climb to No. 17 in the world this year, following his debut in Auckland, the 21-year-old is poised to lead the charge as the top seed in the men’s ASB Classic.

Shelton, the youngest American to break into the world’s top 50, headlines a group of promising young talents, injecting energy into the 69th edition of the ASB Classic, an ATP 250 event.

Other notable participants include 23-year-old Felix Auger-Aliassime (ranked 29), 27-year-old American Chris Eubanks (ranked 34), 19-year-old Frenchman Arthur Fils (world no. 36), 25-year-old Australian Max Purcell (ranked 45), JJ Wolf (USA) at 25 years old and ranked 53, and 25-year-old German Daniel Altmaier, currently ranked 56 in the world.

Out of the 26 players, 19 have secured direct entry, three have received wildcards (including Monfils and the New Zealand playoff winner, with one yet to be confirmed), and the remaining four will emerge from the qualifying rounds.

On the women’s side, the 2024 ASB Classic promises a star-studded lineup with three Grand Slam champions and a former world finals winner confirmed for action in Auckland.

Leading the charge is world No. 3 Coco Gauff, who, at just 19 years old, will defend her ASB Classic title when the women’s competition kicks off on January 1 at the ASB Arena. Gauff celebrated for her remarkable on-court performances and off-court humanity, captured attention in Auckland last year before clinching her first Grand Slam title at the US Open.

Adding to the excitement is the return of legendary player Caroline Wozniacki, making her eighth appearance in Auckland. Despite an illustrious career with 30 titles, including the Australian Open in 2018 and the World Finals in 2016, Wozniacki, who recently returned to the game after the birth of her daughter, seeks to secure the elusive ASB Arena trophy in her seventh attempt, having twice reached the final.

Excited to see Emma Raducanu & Amanda Anisimova make their comebacks to tennis in Auckland starting January 1st.

Tennis has missed you both. ❤ pic.twitter.com/LXzsNvYiVB
